Client needs

This client requested a quotation for a scaffold that would provide safe access to a dormer on the rear elevation of their property so repair work could be carried out. A dormer typically projects out from the roof slope, putting it above normal ladder-working height and making a proper scaffold the sensible way to reach it. We quoted £700 for this job, including our standard 4-week hire period. That gave the client a stable, fully boarded platform at the right height, rather than trying to tackle the repairs off a ladder.

Whether you need a scaffold tower, working platform or a larger access scaffold, our scaffolding company in Portsmouth can supply and erect suitable scaffolds for domestic, commercial and construction work across the city.

The scaffold we erected

For this project, our scaffolders built an access tower measuring approximately 13 ft wide and 7.0 metres high. The tower consisted of three scaffold lifts, with the first and top lifts fully boarded, and the top lift taking the working level up to the dormer so the repairs could be reached comfortably. Each platform was five boards deep, giving a generous surface with plenty of room for the client to stand, move around and keep their tools and materials close at hand while they worked.

Safety features

We built safety features into the structure from the ground up. We fitted double handrails to each boarded platform, with an upper and lower rail running around the boarded lifts to guard against falls from height. We provided access internally through the scaffold with a fixed ladder, securely tied to the framework so it stayed firmly in place while in use. On the first lift, we installed a safety ladder gate, which closes off the ladder opening once someone has climbed onto the platform and removes the open gap that would otherwise be left. On the top lift, where the client was working at the dormer, we fitted a trapdoor gate over the ladder access point for added fall protection, so the opening is covered off as soon as they step up onto the platform. Together, these features gave the client a safe, enclosed working environment at each level of the tower.

This tower was erected at the rear of the house, sitting over the paved patio and garden area behind the property. As the scaffold stood entirely within the client’s private garden, no pavement licence was required for this job. As a self-contained tower rather than a long run of scaffolding along the elevation, it kept a compact footprint on site while still delivering the full working height needed to reach the dormer. That makes this type of structure a tidy, cost-effective solution when the work is concentrated on one specific area of the roof rather than spread across the whole face of a building.

Hire period

As with all of our scaffolds, this tower came with our standard 4-week hire period included in the £700 price. The four weeks gave our client plenty of time to complete their repair work without the pressure of a tight deadline, and if more time is needed, the hire can be extended. Once the dormer repairs were finished, our team returned to dismantle the scaffold and clear all equipment from the site.

Other scaffold access solutions in Portsmouth

Scaffold access can vary considerably depending on the work and the site. While this project only required a compact tower to reach the dormer, we also erect larger temporary access structures. On another local project, we installed a scaffold access ramp in St. Michael’s Road, Portsmouth, with a landing platform to provide safe pedestrian access to a modular building on a construction site.
